The covered bridge depicted here became famous after the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Philippi (Philippi Races), the first organized land engagement of the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/), fought in the town on 3 June 1861.
