The defensive system was built along France's eastern frontiers prior to the Second World [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) (1939-45) but was largely bi-passed by Germany's [blitzkrieg](https://www.worldhistory.org/Blitzkrieg/) tactics.
