A reformer, Sultan Mahmud II implemented numerous changes to the Ottoman state, which among many included the disbandment of the Janissary Corps. His reign saw territorial losses for the [Ottoman Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ottoman_Empire/), but also laid the foundations for the Tanzimat era of reforms that succeded him.
