On 13 September 1759, British forces under Major-General James Wolfe and French troops under Lieutenant-General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm met for [battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) on the promontory before the walls of Québec [City](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/). The Battle of the Plains of [Abraham](https://www.worldhistory.org/Abraham,_the_Patriarch/) would be a victory for Wolfe, and a decisive one for the British [Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) in the Seven Years' [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/), although he would not live to see it, falling to gunshot wounds as the fighting culminated, as would his opponent, Montcalm, the next day.
