## Image Caption

Saitobaru [kofun](https://www.worldhistory.org/Kofun/) landscape, photograph by Jan van der Crabben, Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu, [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/), September 2025.

A plethora of keyhole-shaped [burial](https://www.worldhistory.org/burial/) mounds called *kofun* were constructed between 300-600 CE. Unlike most other kofun sites in Japan, the Miyazaki Plain's landscape looks much the same as it did during the [Kofun Period](https://www.worldhistory.org/Kofun_Period/), as it is a protected area without any modern buildings surrounding it.
