Katō Kiyomasa (1562-1611) was a Japanese daimyō in the service of [Toyotomi Hideyoshi](https://www.worldhistory.org/Toyotomi_Hideyoshi/). He was granted half of the Higo Province (in modern-day Kumamoto Prefecture) in 1588 and took over Kumamoto Castle. He was given lordship over the full province after the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Sekigahara (1600) and constructed the present Kumamoto Castle in 1607.
