The House of the Virgin Mary (Turkish: *Meryem Ana Evi*) is a Catholic shrine situated on Mount Koressos (Turkish: *Bülbüldağı*), near the ancient [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) of [Ephesus](https://www.worldhistory.org/ephesos/). It lies approximately 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) from the modern town of Selçuk in western Turkey. The site was discovered in the 19th century CE through the reported visions of the nun Anne Catherine Emmerich. The site is visited by both Christian and Muslim pilgrims, who associate it with the tradition that Mary, the mother of [Jesus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Jesus_Christ/), was brought there by Saint John the Apostle after her son's [crucifixion](https://www.worldhistory.org/crucifixion/) and spent the final years of her life in this dwelling.
