A figure, perhaps [Roger Mortimer](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roger_Mortimer/), outstretches his hand to take the royal sceptre from the deposed king Edward II, who would be slain later that year. Mortimer's invasion of [England](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/england/) in 1326 installed himself as de facto ruler alongside the queen regent [Isabella of France](https://www.worldhistory.org/Isabella_of_France/), only to see himself deposed and hanged for usurpation of royal power some short years later.
