In the spring of 1312, [Piers Gaveston](https://www.worldhistory.org/Piers_Gaveston/), companion and favourite of [Edward II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edward_II_of_England/), was besieged at Scarborough Castle, where he soon surrendered to the incensed English nobles hunting him. Prior to his capture, Gaveston had the ear of the king and his patronage, a relationship that sorely embittered the English magnates, leading to rebellion and his ultimate beheading.
