## Image Caption

*Guy Beauchamp Earl of Warwick and [Piers Gaveston](https://www.worldhistory.org/Piers_Gaveston/) Earl of Cornwall 1330*, illustration by T. Tovey after a miniature in the 15th-century Rous Roll, 1793.

Depicted on the right stands a triumphant Guy de Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, upon the decapitated body of Piers Gaveston, the companion and favourite of [Edward II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edward_II_of_England/), King of [England](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/england/). Prior to his execution, Gaveston had the ear of the king and his patronage, a relationship that sorely embittered the English magnates, leading to rebellion and his ultimate capture and beheading.
