A photograph of the ruined [tomb](https://www.worldhistory.org/tomb/) of [Muhammad](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Muhammad/) Ahmad (1844-1885) in Omdurman, Sudan. The self-proclaimed Mahdi's tomb was destroyed by the British after the [Battle of Omdurman](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2916/battle-of-omdurman/) on 2 September 1898 during the [Mahdist War](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mahdist_War/) (1881-99). The tomb originally had a large dome. The structure has been restored since this photograph was taken in the early 20th century.
