The [battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) in the Sudan was between an Anglo-[Egyptian](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Egyptian/)-Sudanese army and the Mahdist State. The former won the battle and then the [Mahdist War](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mahdist_War/) in 1899.
