A portrait of General Herbert Kitchener (1850-1916), who was Sirdar of the [Egyptian](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Egyptian/) Army from 1892. In this capacity, Kitchener led an Anglo-Egyptian-Sudanese army into Sudan and won the [battle of Omdurman](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2916/battle-of-omdurman/) in 1898 and the [Mahdist War](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mahdist_War/) the year after.
