This painting depicts the wedding of [Louis XIV](https://www.worldhistory.org/Louis_XIV_of_France/) and Marie-Thérèse on the 9th of June, 1660. The union of France and Spain signaled a peaceful future between two powerful states in [Europe](https://www.worldhistory.org/europe/). The marriage was negotiated by Cardinal Mazarin and the Queen Mother of France, [Anne of Austria](https://www.worldhistory.org/Anne_of_Austria/), to further cement France's dominace in the continent and secure Louis' rule.
