This painting depicts King [Louis XIV of France](https://www.worldhistory.org/Louis_XIV_of_France/) leading his army across the Rhine in 1672, during the opening phase of the Franco-Dutch [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/). His repeated invasions into the Low Countries triggered the broader conflict of the War of Spanish Succession in the following decade.
