This oil sketch depicts the death of [Louis XIV](https://www.worldhistory.org/Louis_XIV_of_France/) at Versailles. Barker was commissioned by King Louis Philippe I to create a larger painting of the sketch; however, the finished artwork went missing during the [French Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/French_Revolution/) of 1848 and the sack of the Palais Royal.
