Amakusa Shiro (1621-1638) was the supposed leader of the [Shimabara Rebellion](https://www.worldhistory.org/Shimabara_Rebellion/), a Christian uprising in southern [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/) from 1637-1638. After a protracted siege, his final stand was in the Inner Ward of Hara Castle, the highest point of the fort. This is where a statue of him stands today - [a similar one can also be found in the nearby Shimabara Castle](https://www.worldhistory.org/image/17611/statue-of-amakusa-shiro-at-shimabara-castle/).
