This portrait shows Frederick the Great in his childhood. He was the son of the then-Crown Prince of Prussia, Frederick William, and Sophia of Hanover. With the [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) of his grandfather early in his life, and the ascension of his father to the throne of Prussia, he was made crown prince at the age of 1.
