Idealized depiction of [Frederick the Great](https://www.worldhistory.org/Frederick_the_Great/) of Prussia, painting by Wilhelm Camphausen, Germany, 1870.

This painting is a dramatized version of Frederick the Great painted almost a century after his [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/). The idealized form of the portrait reflects the need for national heroes in the Prussian quest for German unification. He would become synonimous with German military ingenuity and struggle for its sovereignty.
