The church was originally founded by Princess Cuthburh of Wessex in 705. It was the [burial](https://www.worldhistory.org/burial/) site for King [Aethelred](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Aethelred/) of Wessex in 871, before the Normans rebuilt it in the 12th century.
