Three coins of the ninth-century Anglo-Saxon rulers, King [Aethelred](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Aethelred/) of Wessex (r. 865-871) and King Burgred of Mercia (r. 852-874). The [coin](https://www.worldhistory.org/coinage/) on the right is of Aethelred and the other two coins are of Burgred. The two men were brothers-in-[law](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/law/) and allies who fought against the [Viking](https://www.worldhistory.org/Vikings/) invasion of [Britain](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Britain/).
