A portrait of Frederic Thesiger, better known as Lord Chelmsford (1827-1905), who was appointed to lead a punitive British expedition into the [Zulu kingdom](https://www.worldhistory.org/Zulu_Kingdom/) but infamously lost the [Battle of Isandlwana](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2909/battle-of-isandlwana/) on 22 January 1879, the first encounter of the [Anglo-Zulu War](https://www.worldhistory.org/Anglo-Zulu_War/).
