The [Hellenic world](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hellenic_World/) (c. 3000-30 BCE) refers to the long and uneven development of [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/)-speaking societies from early [Bronze Age](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Bronze_Age/) communities to a vast cultural sphere spanning the eastern [Mediterranean](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/mediterranean/) and [Near East](https://www.worldhistory.org/Near_East/). Rather than a single state or continuous [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/), the [Hellenic](https://www.worldhistory.org/greece/) world emerged through shared language, religious practices, artistic forms, and political ideas that evolved over nearly three millennia. Early maritime networks, [palace](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/palace/)-centered economies, and regional cultures laid the foundations for later social complexity, while periods of collapse and recovery reshaped settlement patterns, technology, and modes of governance. Throughout this long timespan, interaction, through [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/), [warfare](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/), migration, and cultural exchange, was as formative as internal development.

From the early first millennium BCE onward, Greek societies experimented with new political systems, including aristocracy, tyranny, and citizen-based governance, most notably in the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/)-states of the [Archaic](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Archaic/) and Classical periods. Intellectual inquiry, [philosophy](https://www.worldhistory.org/philosophy/), historical [writing](https://www.worldhistory.org/writing/), and dramatic arts flourished alongside military competition and imperial rivalry. Following the conquests of [Alexander the Great](https://www.worldhistory.org/Alexander_the_Great/) (reign 336–323 BCE), [Greek culture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Greek_Culture/) spread across a vast territory, giving rise to the [Hellenistic world](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hellenistic_Period/), where Greek language and ideas blended with local traditions under monarchies such as the Ptolemies and Seleucids. The Hellenic age effectively ended with [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) domination of the eastern Mediterranean, yet its cultural, political, and intellectual legacy profoundly shaped Roman [civilization](https://www.worldhistory.org/civilization/) and, through it, later Western and global history.
