*Annunciation with [Saint Peter](https://www.worldhistory.org/Saint_Peter/) [Martyr](https://www.worldhistory.org/martyr/),* painting by Fra Angelico, photograph by Erik Möller, Florence, 19 May, 2005.

In Cell 3 of the San Marco Convent, Fra Angelico painted the *Annunciation with Saint Peter the Martyr* in 1438 CE. Mary kneels before the Angel Gabriel who has come to tell her that she will give birth to Christ. There is a third figure in this picture, a monk of the Dominican Order, who listens from behind the angel’s wings, hands clasped in prayer. By inserting a non-divine figure into the scene, Angelico invites the viewer to experience the Annunciation first hand, to feel the profoundness of the moment in a personal way, as Angelico himself undoubtedly did.
