British artist Francesco Renaldi travelled to [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/) with the backing of the British [East India Company](https://www.worldhistory.org/East_India_Company/) in 1786. He produced various portraits from his time in Calcutta, such as this piece of an unidentified woman of elite rank, wearing expensive fabric and jewels, sitting down.
