Portrait of Admiral Blas de Lezo, oil on canvas painting, c. 1853.

Portrayed here is the Spanish naval officer Blas de Lezo (1689-1741), whose illustrious career saw the loss of his left eye, left leg, and the use of his right arm. Besieged by a British fleet during the [War of Jenkins' Ear](https://www.worldhistory.org/War_of_Jenkins'_Ear/) (1739-1748), Lezo led a stalwart defense of the harbour and [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) of Cartagena de Indias, in what is now Colombia, forcing the Royal Navy to lift the blockade and withdraw.
