*A Perspective View of the Action at Cartagena*, etching, c. 1741.

Depicted here is the harbour at Cartagena de Indias, in what is now Colombia, besieged by the Kingdom of Great [Britain](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Britain/)'s Royal Navy during the [War of Jenkins' Ear](https://www.worldhistory.org/War_of_Jenkins'_Ear/) (1739-1748). A disastrous effort, the campaign to take the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) was thwarted by rampant disease, leadership squabbles, and a stalwart defense under the Spanish admiral Blas de Lezo.
