The military orders of the Latin East emerged during the 12th and 13th centuries as institutions combining religious devotion, communal discipline, and organized [warfare](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/). Developing after the [First Crusade](https://www.worldhistory.org/First_Crusade/) (1096–1099), they protected pilgrims, defended fortresses, and supported the [Crusader States](https://www.worldhistory.org/Crusader_States/) of Outremer. The [Knights Templar](https://www.worldhistory.org/Knights_Templar/) (c. 1119/20–1312), [Knights Hospitaller](https://www.worldhistory.org/Knights_Hospitaller/) (military role from the 1120s), and Teutonic Order (military order from 1198) became the most powerful, while smaller groups such as the Orders of St Lazarus, Montjoie, and St Thomas of Acre played more specialized roles. Their members combined religious vows with military service, reflecting the close link between crusading, chivalric [culture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/culture/), and warfare.

The larger orders developed extensive networks of estates, castles, hospitals, and administrative centres across [Europe](https://www.worldhistory.org/europe/) and the [Mediterranean](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/mediterranean/). These resources sustained garrisons, campaigns, logistics, and charitable work in the Latin East. After the fall of Acre in 1291, their paths diverged: the Templars were suppressed in 1312, the Hospitallers shifted their power to [Rhodes](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rhodes/) and later Malta, and the Teutonic Order concentrated increasingly on the Baltic. Their history shows how faith, warfare, political authority, and institutional power became deeply intertwined in medieval Christendom.
