Some developed from hospitals or religious communities, while others were established specifically as armed brotherhoods. Their members combined religious vows and communal discipline with functions ranging from caring for pilgrims and the sick to defending castles, territories, and pilgrimage routes. 1. **[Knights Templar](https://www.worldhistory.org/Knights_Templar/)** (c. 1119/20–1312) – an explicitly military order dedicated to protecting pilgrims and defending the Crusader States, supported by extensive estates across [Europe](https://www.worldhistory.org/europe/). 2. **[Knights Hospitaller](https://www.worldhistory.org/Knights_Hospitaller/)** (recognized 1113; military role from c. 1120s) – developed from a hospital caring for pilgrims and the sick into a major military order controlling fortresses and territories. 3. **Teutonic Order** (founded c. 1190; military order from 1198) – began as a German hospital at Acre and later became a military order active in the Holy Land before shifting its principal focus to Prussia and Livonia. 4. **Order of St Lazarus** (12th century–17th century) – originated as a leper hospital and religious community and developed a limited military role by the 13th century. 5. **Canons of the Holy Sepulchre** (c. 1099–1489) – maintained worship at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, received pilgrims, and administered estates; unlike the major military orders, they remained primarily a canonical religious community. 6. **Order of St Thomas of Acre** (c. 1190–1538; military role from c. 1228) – began as an English hospital and religious order at Acre before developing a small military component during the 13th century. The larger orders established networks of estates, castles, hospitals, and administrative centres across Europe and the [Mediterranean](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/mediterranean/), providing resources for [warfare](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/), logistics, and charitable work in the Latin East. After the fall of Acre in 1291, their histories diverged: the Templars were suppressed in 1312, the Hospitallers shifted first to [Cyprus](https://www.worldhistory.org/cyprus/) and then [Rhodes](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rhodes/), and the Teutonic Order increasingly concentrated on the Baltic, while several smaller institutions declined, merged, or transformed.
