Axolotl, ink and paint on parchment, unknown artist, included in the *[Florentine Codex](https://www.worldhistory.org/Florentine_Codex/)* by Bernardino de Sahagún, Mexico, 1577.
An axolotl, which was described by the accompanying Spanish textual gloss as a meal fit for the nobility. Described by the accompanying Nahuatl textual gloss as savory. Both of the texts describe the axolotl's anatomy as being lizard-like, with a tail, a large mouth, and with characteristic appendages on the necks.
