On 5 October 1864, Brigadier General John Murray Corse (1835-1893), having taken command of the Federal garrison at the Allatoona mountain pass, repulsed a Confederate strike meant to disrupt and ruin Union supply routes. Corse was less a cheekbone and an ear, but the Federal victory at the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Allatoona was to be a harbinger for the Rebels' disastrous [Franklin-Nashville Campaign](https://www.worldhistory.org/Franklin-Nashville_Campaign/).
