Known as the "Rock of Chickamauga," Union Major General George Henry Thomas (1816-1870) played important roles in several key battles of the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/), including the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Chickamauga, the [Atlanta Campaign](https://www.worldhistory.org/Atlanta_Campaign/), and the [Battle of Nashville](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2816/battle-of-nashville/).
