*West Point and the Highlands*, colour engraving by [Samuel](https://www.worldhistory.org/samuel/) [Valentine](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Valentine/) Hunt, 1869.

Depicted here is a view from the heights of the west bank of the Hudson River, looking northward along the valley. The United States Military Academy, also commonly referred to simply as "West Point," was established on the plateau here in 1802, transforming the original fortress, built to obstruct British navigation through the waterway in the [American Revolutionary War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Revolutionary_War/), into a site to train the country's officer corps.
