Roman apartment buildings (*insulae*) in Utica in modern-day Tunisia. Utica, one of Tunisia's oldest [cities](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/), originated as a Phoenician settlement between the 8th and 12th centuries BCE and later evolved into a [Punic](https://www.worldhistory.org/carthage/) and then a Roman town. The houses are a testament to the wealth of Utica in the Roman period. These *insulae*, like those in other Roman cities, provided housing for many urban residents, featuring shops on the ground floor and apartments of varying size and luxury on the upper levels.
