Depicted here is a home altar of offerings (*ofrenda*) assembled for the Day of the Dead (*Día de los Muertos*), a widely observed festival in Mexico in which celebrants commemorate the departed. These altars welcome the deceased back home and may display, among others, mementos of the dead, flowers, food items, drinks, candles, and tissue paper garlands known as *papel picados*.
