## Image Caption

Mask of [Mictlantecuhtli](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mictlantecuhtli/), painted wood carving, c. 1450-1521.

Depicted here is a wooden mask of a skeletal face representing the [Aztec](https://www.worldhistory.org/Aztec_Civilization/) deity Mictlantecuhtli, Lord of the Underworld. As there are no eyeholes for a potential wearer to see from, it is believed this mask was likely affixed to a statue of Mictlantecuhtli.
