Exterior view of the ruins of the [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) [amphitheatre](https://www.worldhistory.org/amphitheatre/) in ancient Thysdrus, photograph by Carole Raddato, El Djem, Tunisia, 16 February, 2023.

The [architecture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/architecture/) of the Amphitheatre of El Djem is an impressive feat of engineering, featuring three tiers of arcades standing almost 36 metres high (118 feet) and underground passages for housing animals and gladiators. This structure stands as one of the largest and best-preserved Roman monuments in the world.
