Depicted here is Major General William Tecumseh Sherman observing the field at the siege of Atlanta, part of the [Atlanta Campaign](https://www.worldhistory.org/Atlanta_Campaign/) in the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/), in which Confederate forces were ultimately made to abandon the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/), boosting Federal moral, contributing to [Abraham](https://www.worldhistory.org/Abraham,_the_Patriarch/) Lincoln's re-election, and leading to [Sherman's March to the Sea](https://www.worldhistory.org/Sherman's_March_to_the_Sea/) to degrade the South's will and ability to stay in the fight.
