Resigning his short-lived position of superintendent at the Louisiana Military Academy, the Ohio-born William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) headed north, away from the seceding South and ultimately to a commission in the Union Army, where he distinguished himself in growing command responsibilities during the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/). Sherman's invasion of Georgia, the taking of Atlanta, and his "March to the Sea" to capture Savannah sounded the [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) knell of the Confederacy.
