The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain was an [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/) engagement in the [Atlanta Campaign](https://www.worldhistory.org/Atlanta_Campaign/), fought 27 June 1864, in which Union forces were repulsed by staunch Confederate positions on the mountain heights. Although victorious, a flanking manoeuvre days later compelled the Confederates to abandon their hold.
