McPherson at the Battle of Atlanta (22 July 1864), felled by Confederate gunfire, during the [Atlanta Campaign](https://www.worldhistory.org/Atlanta_Campaign/) in the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/). Atlanta would not fall to Union forces until September of that year.
