The [Ara Pacis Augustae](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/618/ara-pacis-augustae/) or Altar of the Augustan Peace in [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/) (south entrance). Built to celebrate the return of [Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/augustus/) to Rome in 13 BCE following campaigns in Spain and [Gaul](https://www.worldhistory.org/gaul/), it is a masterpiece of [Roman sculpture](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Sculpture/) and, in particular, portraiture. Officials and the Imperial family are depicted in an animated procession in the relief panels on the exterior of the altar. (Museo dell'Ara Pacis, Rome)
