Juana of Austria (1535–1573), daughter of Emperor Charles V, married Prince Juan of Portugal and later served as the regent of Spain whislt her brother, King Phillip II, was in [England](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/england/). Sofonisba was a well known painter and teacher in the Spanish court and likely secured this commission through these connections.
