Portrait of [Catherine II of Russia](https://www.worldhistory.org/Catherine_the_Great/) (the Great) in officer's uniform. The German princess (born Princess Sophia Augusta Frederica of Anhalt-Zerbst) ruled Russia from 1762 to 1796 after overthrowing her husband Peter III and became one of Russia's most remarkable rulers.
