The Ara Pacis Augustae or Altar of the Augustan Peace in [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/). Built to celebrate the return of [Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/augustus/) to Rome in 13 BCE following campaigns in Spain and [Gaul](https://www.worldhistory.org/gaul/), it is a masterpiece of [Roman sculpture](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Sculpture/) and, in particular, portraiture.
