The Tlaxcallans are an indigenous Nahua people from central Mexico. In the early 16th century, they allied with the Spanish in their [war](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) against the Aztecs and were instrumental in the collapse of the [Aztec Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Aztec_Civilization/). La Malinche is seen here in her capacity as Hernán Cortés' interpreter and diplomat.
