Portrait of Confederate General [John Bell Hood](https://www.worldhistory.org/John_Bell_Hood/), photograph by Mathew Brady, c. 1865.

Depicted here in civilian clothing is John Bell Hood (1831-1879), the Confederate general who rose to lead the Army of Tennessee in the final year of the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/). The conflict took the use of Hood's left arm and right leg, and his late and unsuccessful command in the western theater saw the decimation of his forces. In the postbellum years, Hood tried his hand at cotton brokering and then insurance sales, but yellow fever would take his life, and that of his wife and eldest daughter, all within a week.
