Portrait of Confederate General [John Bell Hood](https://www.worldhistory.org/John_Bell_Hood/), photograph by J. A. Sheldon, c. 1861-1865.

Depicted here is a uniformed John Bell Hood (1831-1879), the Confederate general who rose to lead the Army of Tennessee in the final year of the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/). The conflict took the use of Hood's left arm and right leg, and his late and unsuccessful command in the western theater saw the decimation of his forces.
