The field marshal developed the [Schlieffen plan](https://www.worldhistory.org/Schlieffen_Plan/), Germany's plan of attack on France devised in 1905 for execution should [war](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) break out between the two states. The plan aimed to move through neutral Belgium and attack the main French fortifications from behind.
