This illustration is included in a large manuscript about the history of Spain's colonial possessions in New Spain, with particular attention paid to [Aztec civilization](https://www.worldhistory.org/Aztec_Civilization/) and various indigenous populations in what is now Mexico. Here Hernán Cortés, seated on a red stool, is in conversation with his soon-to-be interpreter and confidant, La Malinche.
